29 Days and counting.

My husband suffers from an auto-immune disease that is related to his thyroid. How he feels is directly related to what he eats.  For as long as we have been together, I have tried to be as disciplined as he is, but I don’t have troubles with dairy or intestinal issues, so if I ate pizza once a week, I was not really too concerned.

Well, since I turned 50, I had “the talk” from my Doctor that started with “At your age….” He is concerned about my blood sugar and my blood pressure and my weight and my lack of physical activity.  Medically speaking, if I don’t make some changes, and do it in a timely manner, I mine as well go purchase a pill-box and some compression socks.

I was not feeling bad, but I was not feeling good if this makes any sense at all.  I did some research.  I tried a few new things.  I added walking and yoga into my daily routine and lo and behold, I dropped 20 pounds and felt better than I had in months.  I had energy.  My sugar cravings were slim to none (no pun intended) It was amazing.

I don’t know where things took a turn, but my  walks went from once a day to every other day, then once a week.  I skipped breakfast and had a coffee with sugar-free sweetener on my way to get the kids and took them to the food court for lunch.

In two weeks, I was right back to where I was when I decided to take on this new and improved health kick.  Back to sleeping in past 8am and blowing off the yoga and exercise.  Back to drinking coffee in front of the computer and getting up only to have a muffin or a bowl of sugar laden cereal.  Back to eating popcorn or ice cream after dinner and staying up late because my stomach ached or I was wired from the Starbucks at 4pm.   Ugh.  It was awful and so preventable.

I have decided to take the 30 day challenge.  I know I can make it work.  My goal is to have all of my numbers down by my next Doctor appointment.  Not for him, but for me.  I am working on clearing out all of the temptations from my cabinets.  I spent yesterday making and freezing healthy meals that don’t contain any cheese or potato’s.  I have a huge thing of water in the fridge that reminds me to drink it every time I open the door.  I have told a few people what I am doing so, it will sort of hold me accountable.  And so far?  So good.

If I can make it through one birthday party and a family reunion, two Labor Day gatherings and packing school lunches for the kids?  I will be golden.  29 days and counting.

    1. You know you can do this because you’ve done this before. I struggled with my weight and shape for almost 30 years. Then 38 years ago I figured it out–and this is different for every person. But for me what works: 1) workout buddies, 2) personal trainer 3) recording food either through app or weight watchers which helped me figure out the right combo of foods/activity so I could maintain, and 4) getting back on the horse as fast as possible because I know I will fall off occasionally. Go girlfriend!
